Ghanaian Football Greats: Osei Kofi, Polo, Sunday, Odartey Lamptey and Daniel Quaye Honoured

Accra: Five former Ghana internationals from different generations have been recognised for their contribution to football in the country.

According to Ghana Web, the honourees include 1963 and 1965 Africa Cup of Nations winner Rev Osei Kofi, 1971 African Footballer of the Year and 1972 AFCON runner-up Ibrahim Sunday, 1978 AFCON winner Mohammed Ahmed "Polo", 1995 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner Nii Odartey Lamptey, and 2001 CAF Champions League winner Dan Quaye.

The celebrated footballers took centre stage on Friday, July 31, 2026, during the grand finale of the BR€¦‚¬Å“HM Honours Legends campaign. This initiative, spearheaded by leading home appliance brand BR€¦‚¬Å“HM, aims to celebrate Ghana's football heroes while they are still alive to receive the nation's gratitude. The event was held at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, and brought together football legends, government officials, business leaders, and sports stakeholders.

The ceremony honoured five of Ghana's most revered football legends whose achievements span some of the most defining eras in Ghana's football history. Their accomplishments include Africa Cup of Nations triumphs, continental club success, youth world championship glory, and FIFA World Cup representation, which have inspired generations of Ghanaians both domestically and internationally.

The event marked the culmination of the nationwide BR€¦‚¬Å“HM Honours Legends campaign, which combined documentary storytelling, digital engagement, and public conversations to preserve the stories of Ghana's football pioneers. It also aimed to reconnect younger generations with the personalities behind the nation's greatest sporting moments.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to Ghanaian football, each legend received a commemorative citation, a BR€¦‚¬Å“HM television, and a BR€¦‚¬Å“HM refrigerator. The ceremony attracted numerous distinguished guests, including representatives from Somotex Ghana Limited and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, as well as members of Ghana's corporate and sporting communities.

Guests enjoyed documentary screenings celebrating each legend's remarkable journey, cultural performances by the Ayital Cultural Agency, and a musical serenade by Rama Black. The evening concluded with standing ovations and heartfelt tributes reflecting the profound impact the honourees have had on Ghana's sporting identity.

Roshanak Taheri, Head of Marketing, BR€¦‚¬Å“HM Global, explained that the campaign was designed to go beyond conventional sports marketing by celebrating the people whose sacrifices laid the foundation for Ghana's football success. She emphasized the importance of remembering the origins of these achievements.

Awurakua Antwi, Marketing Manager for BR€¦‚¬Å“HM Ghana and Somotex Ghana Limited, highlighted the brand's longstanding relationship with Ghanaian families and its role in celebrating the heroes behind cherished memories, aiming to preserve their stories for future generations.

Veronica Commey, Deputy Director-General of the National Sports Authority, delivered the keynote goodwill message, praising BR€¦‚¬Å“HM for recognizing sporting heroes during their lifetime and encouraging more organizations to emulate this meaningful initiative.
