Ghanaian Fishermen Rescued After 12 Days Stranded at Sea

Sekondi:A seven-member crew of Ghanaian fishermen found themselves stranded at sea for nearly 12 days after the engine of their canoe, named Second Chance, malfunctioned on the third day of their planned five-day fishing expedition.

According to Ghana Web, the fishermen departed from Sekondi on October 9, 2026, and were swept away by strong winds and sea currents after their outboard motor failed. This led them through Togolese waters and eventually into Benin, where they were rescued.

The crew faced significant hardships during their ordeal, including running out of food and water. They resorted to drinking boiled sea water to reduce salt concentration and catching fresh fish with hooks and lines after their initial supplies spoiled.

As they drifted, the fishermen spotted what appeared to be land one night. They used their mobile phones to contact Kingsley, a friend back home, who helped them establish communication with their fishing leaders. Initially believing they were in Togo, they discovered they had drifted into Benin.

The chief fisherman in Benin, contacted by Kingsley and the fishing leaders, provided aid by supplying food and water. Local fishermen, alongside Beninese and Togolese authorities, assisted in the rescue, bringing the fishermen to safety and ending the uncertainty for their families and community.
