Ghanaian Entrepreneur Builds £15 Million McDonald’s Franchise in UK

Accra:Ghanaian entrepreneur Joey Kusi Antwi has successfully transformed a part-time job at McDonald's into a £15 million business in the United Kingdom, owning three restaurants and employing nearly 300 people.

According to Ghana Web, Antwi's journey began when he moved from Ghana to the UK at 22 to pursue a master's degree in finance, after graduating as a university valedictorian and securing a scholarship. While studying, he worked part-time at McDonald's to support himself financially. This role, initially meant to meet immediate needs, eventually sparked his interest in business ownership.

After completing his studies, Antwi gained experience in finance and management consulting, working with organizations like the Royal Bank of Scotland and Accenture. Despite his success in the corporate world, he ventured into entrepreneurship, starting a healthcare business during the COVID-19 pandemic. This business reportedly generated the capital necessary for him to pursue his ambition of owning McDonald's franchises.

Becoming a franchisee required Antwi to undergo an intensive training program. He then expanded his operations to three McDonald's locations in the UK. These restaurants reportedly generate over £15 million in combined annual turnover. However, this figure represents the business's revenue and not Antwi's personal earnings or profit, and has not been independently verified through company accounts.

Antwi's story illustrates the potential for a career to evolve from employment into business ownership through strategic decisions and investments. His background in finance and management, coupled with his entrepreneurial ventures, provided experiences that contributed to his successful transition into franchise ownership. This journey highlights the importance of developing professional skills, building capital, and identifying opportunities beyond traditional career paths for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those from Ghana living abroad.
