Ghanaian Educator Overcomes Academic Challenges to Teach at Oxford University

Oxford:Dr. George Asiamah's remarkable academic journey has seen him progress from failing his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Ghana to becoming a tutor at the prestigious University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

According to Ghana Web, Asiamah completed his SSCE in 2003, receiving four Fs and three Es in the seven subjects he attempted, a shocking outcome considering his strong performance in basic school. As the best candidate in his Junior High School, he had an aggregate of 22, making the SSCE results unexpected and disappointing.

After receiving his results, which were handed to him silently by his headmistress, Asiamah struggled to understand his failure. In the wake of this setback, he took on various jobs to make ends meet, including working as a shoe shine boy, selling secondhand clothes, and working as a shop attendant in Kumasi.

Despite these challenges, Asiamah persevered with his education, ultimately moving to the United Kingdom for further studies. He completed his PhD in 2023 and now teaches Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) at Exeter College, University of Oxford.

Asiamah shared that his first encounter with Oxford was as a tourist in 2014 while he was pursuing his master's degree in Belfast. A decade later, he returned to Oxford, this time as a tutor with his own office space. He also highlighted Exeter College's connection to Ghana, as it is where former President John Agyekum Kufuor earned his first degree.
