Accra: The Government of Ghana has expressed condolences and solidarity with the Government and people of Jamaica following the impact of Hurricane Melissa, a Category Five storm. Hurricane Melissa has caused destruction and loss of lives since hitting the Caribbean nation on October 28, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Monday, said the Government of Ghana ‘regrets the increasing death toll and widespread destruction in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa.’ President John Dramani Mahama, through a diplomatic note to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, conveyed condolences to the Government and people of Jamaica and to the families who have lost loved ones in the disaster.
He also wished the injured a speedy recovery and extended sympathy to all those rendered homeless as a result of the storm. ‘The Republic of Ghana stands in solidarity with Jamaica as the nation navigates through these difficult times and expresses confidence in the resilience and determination of the Jamaican people to overcome this tragedy and rebuild their beautiful country,’ the statement added.
The Government further assured Jamaica of Ghana’s continued support and best wishes as the Caribbean nation begins recovery and rebuilding efforts. Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in Jamaica last week, has been described by meteorologists as one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the island nation.
It brought torrential rains, flash floods, and destructive winds that toppled power lines, destroyed homes, and disrupted essential services across several parishes. International rescue and relief operations are ongoing as the Jamaican authorities work to assess the full extent of the damage and deliver aid to affected communities.
