Accra, Ghana: In a significant contribution to the National Farmers’ Day celebrations, the Ghana EXIM Bank (GEXIM) has presented a tractor, complete with accessories, valued at GHC 711,000 to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). This contribution is earmarked as a sponsorship prize for the 1st Runner-up of the upcoming 39th National Farmers’ Day, scheduled for December 1 in Tarkwa, Western Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the donated tractor, an LS plus 80 (80 horsepower) model, is equipped with a plough, harrow, and boom sprayer and is expected to have a lifespan of 30 years with proper maintenance. This initiative is part of GEXIM’s longstanding commitment to supporting agriculture in Ghana, a sector the bank deems crucial for national development, particularly in the realm of value addition and export.
Mr. Bright Evans Darko, Head of SME Banking at GEXIM, made the presentation on behalf of Mr. Lawrence Agyinsam, the CEO of the bank. According to Mr. Darko, this support is aimed at motivating farmers and fishers to continue their essential contributions to the agricultural sector. He emphasized GEXIM’s focus on agriculture and agro-processing, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of Ghanaian products in the global market.
Mr. Darko noted that the tractor would enable the award-winning farmer to mechanize their farming practices. Research has indicated that mechanization can save time, boost productivity, and increase yields.
Mr. Yaw Frimpong, Deputy Minister for MoFA and Chairman of the 39th Farmers’ Day Planning Committee, expressed gratitude for GEXIM’s gesture, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. He emphasized the importance of such support in boosting productivity and contributing to national food security, particularly in the context of climate change challenges.
This year’s National Farmers’ Day celebrations, themed ‘Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience,’ aim to spotlight sustainable agriculture practices and honor the vital contributions of farmers. The event has also received support from other organizations, including OMNI Fert, New Okaff, and Green Energy Ghana, which have contributed fertilizers and inputs.
