Ghana brushes aside rivals Nigeria to book qualification to 2022 FIFA World Cup

Ghana has secured the ticket to compete at the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament after overcoming rivals Nigeria at the end of a nervy two-legged encounter.

The Black Stars after a disastrous campaign at the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament were tipped to lose against the Super Eagles when the draw was made.

However, following the appointment of German tactician Otto Addo, hope was restored to the team.

Last Friday, the tactician managed to bring improvement to the Ghana national team as the side held the Super Eagles to a goalless draw at the end of the first leg of the playoff tie at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Qatar.

Today at the Moshood Abiola National Sports Stadium in Abuja, Ghana played as a guest to Nigeria in the second leg of the crucial tie in front of 60,000 fans.

On the matchday, Ghana did not do much in the attack but scored first through a long-range strike from midfielder talisman Thomas Partey.

Although Nigeria would restore parity in the 22nd minute when captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty kick, the Super Eagles could not find the second goal.

Courtesy of the 1-1 draw at the end of the 90 minutes, Ghana has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup scheduled to be staged in Qatar late this year.

The feat means the Black Stars of Ghana returns to compete on the global scene after missing the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup.
