Shanghai:GCB Bank PLC has partnered with UnionPay International to launch Ghana's first Chinese Yuan prepaid cards, facilitating direct payments in China's currency for Ghanaian traders, businesses, and travelers. This new initiative aims to streamline financial transactions for Ghanaians engaged in commerce in China, especially for importers frequently traveling to purchase goods.
According to Ghana Web, the cards were officially introduced on October 26, 2026, in Shanghai, China, as part of a strategic move to enhance trade and financial ties between Ghana and China. The Yuan prepaid cards will enable users to make payments through QR codes, point-of-sale terminals, ATMs, and other supported payment methods, allowing direct transactions in Yuan and reducing the necessity for currency conversion through intermediaries like the US dollar.
The initiative is expected to lower currency conversion costs and increase convenience for international transactions. GCB Bank Managing Director Farihan Alhassan emphasized the bank's dedication to assisting Ghanaian businesses in accessing global markets and leveraging trade opportunities. The launch event included notable attendees such as GCB Bank Board Chairman Prof. Joshua Alabi, Board Member Dr. Abdulai Alhassan, and UnionPay International's Deputy Chairman and CEO Larry Wang.
This development signifies a significant step in strengthening Ghana-China financial relations, offering Ghanaian traders improved access to one of their primary sources of imported goods.
