GACL MD Honors Contributions of Past Boards and Managing Directors

Accra:The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has paid tribute to the company’s former Boards of Directors and managing directors for their significant contributions to its growth and development over the past two decades. The acknowledgment came during the launch of GACL’s 20th anniversary celebrations on October 26, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, Opare highlighted the leadership, guidance, and dedication of former board members and managing directors, which have collectively shaped the company into a key institution in Ghana’s aviation industry. GACL, incorporated in 2006 and operational since 2007, was established following its separation from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) with the mandate to manage civil airports and airstrips across the country.

Opare emphasized the role of successive Boards, beginning with the first Board led by the late Dr. John Kobina Richardson, followed by others chaired by Wing Commander Andy Mensah, George Kuntu Blankson, Tony Lithur, Oboshie Sai Cofie, and Paul Adom Otchere. She also recognized the contributions of former managing directors, starting with Essie Anno Sackey and continuing with Doreen Owusu-Fianko, Charles Kwame Asare, John Dekyem Attafuah, Yaw Kwakwa, and Pamela Djamson-Tettey.

Former Director-General of the GCAA, Simon Allotey, was also acknowledged for his executive oversight during GACL’s transition period. Opare reflected on the company’s achievements, including major infrastructure developments like Terminal 3 at Accra International Airport and upgrades to other airports, which have enhanced airport capacity and operational efficiency.

The current Board, chaired by James Agalga, along with management and staff, were commended for their dedication to the company’s strategic direction. The 20th anniversary, themed “A Legacy of Resilience; Developing Further, Serving Better,” aims to celebrate GACL’s journey and set the tone for its future growth, focusing on infrastructure, technology, operational efficiency, and passenger experiences. Opare urged continued professionalism and innovation to strengthen Ghana’s aviation industry.
