The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced that the government has successfully implemented measures to address food shortages in senior high schools under the Free SHS programme. The announcement was made during the commissioning of the National Teaching Council regional office complex in Tamale, where the minister assured the public that sufficient financial provisions have been established to ensure a steady supply of food for students.
According to Ghana Web, Iddrisu highlighted that a review of the Free SHS policy had uncovered recurring food shortages that disrupted academic activities in several schools. These shortages had previously forced some institutions to temporarily close or send students home during the academic term.
"Having examined the feeding of Free Senior High School students, we realised that there were many times that schools had to be closed down or, in the course of the academic year, students had to be asked to go home because there was inadequate food. That is now a thing of the past," Iddrisu stated.
The minister also noted that financing arrangements for the programme have been reinforced through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), ensuring sustainable support for the policy. "There are adequate resources and adequate funding from GETFund to finance Free Senior High School," he added.
Iddrisu reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustaining and improving the flagship education programme, emphasizing its importance in providing quality education to all students in Ghana.
