Fosu Frimpong Calls for Internal Reforms in NPP Ahead of 2028 Elections

Jakarta:Kwaku Fosu Frimpong, a former parliamentary aspirant for the Ahafo Ano North constituency, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to enhance its internal management and improve transparency to reconnect with members before the 2028 general elections.

According to Ghana Web, Fosu Frimpong congratulated the newly elected national executives at the NPP's national delegates conference. He also encouraged those who were not successful to continue supporting the party. He emphasized the need for the party to analyze the reasons behind its 2024 electoral defeat and to work on improving its governance, organization, and engagement with members.

The NPP saw a decline in its presidential votes from 6.7 million in 2020 to 4.88 million in 2024, in addition to losing approximately 50 parliamentary seats. A committee led by Prof. Mike Oquaye linked the defeat to economic conditions, corporate governance lapses, internal conflicts, and members feeling excluded from decision-making processes.

Fosu Frimpong recommended the introduction of quarterly performance scorecards for all 276 constituencies to monitor membership recruitment, polling station activities, dues collection, and community engagement. He also suggested the creation of a verified digital membership register linked to the Ghana Card, the use of mobile money payments for dues, and a digital dashboard to oversee party activities nationwide.

He stressed the importance of publishing audited accounts annually to gain members' trust and reduce reliance on major donors. He estimated that if 500,000 members contributed GHS10 monthly, the party could generate GHS60 million annually to support constituency offices, research, and training.

Additionally, Fosu Frimpong called for more involvement of professionals, young people, and women in decision-making roles within the party. He warned that members who feel excluded may become less motivated to campaign.

With 26 months remaining until the December 2028 elections, he believes the NPP has enough time to rebuild if the new leadership focuses on reforms rather than internal disputes. He emphasized that unity is achieved through systems that make individuals feel valued and accountable.

He concluded by stating that the party's ability to manage its internal affairs would significantly affect its credibility with voters, suggesting that a party that manages itself well earns the trust to manage the nation.
