Eligible Voters in Anyako Frustrated by Postponement of By-Election

Anyako: Eligible voters at the Anyako Electoral Area in Keta Municipality, Volta Region, are expressing frustration over the Electoral Commission's (EC) suspension of the scheduled by-election intended to fill the vacant Assembly member seat.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Assembly seat became vacant in March 2025 following the elevation of Mr. Wisdom Seade, the then Assembly member, to the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta. The EC had initially announced that the by-election would be conducted on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, yet no election has taken place, leaving residents in confusion.

The delay has sparked concern among the residents who are eager to vote and elect a new representative to promote and manage development projects in the area. Mr. Gilbert Korbla Keklie, a concerned citizen, previously petitioned the EC to expedite the process, citing violations of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

Residents worry that the prolonged delay could negatively impact developmental initiatives, depriving the area of its fair share of national resources. Mr. Selasi Yorm, an Anyako resident, noted dissatisfaction with the EC for not displaying notice of polls after opening nominations. The electorate is displeased with the EC's failure to provide prior notice about the suspension.

The EC had assured the public of adequate arrangements for the by-election, including security measures, leaving residents puzzled about the delay. The by-election is crucial for allowing residents to choose from five eligible candidates to fill the vacancy and collaborate with traditional and community leaders for necessary development.

The EC's action in conducting the by-election would affirm its commitment to democratic principles and representation, as further delays might discourage eligible voters from exercising their voting rights. Ghana News Agency reports that the EC has acknowledged receiving petitions and reminders but has not yet acted, prompting questions about its dedication to democracy.

Mr. Philip Adzomadi, an EC officer in Keta, informed GNA that the Commission awaits further instructions from headquarters to proceed with the by-election and urged residents to remain calm.
