Accra: The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a reduction in electricity and water tariffs effective April 1, 2026. Electricity tariffs will be reduced by 4.81%, while water tariffs will drop by 3.06%.
According to Ghana Web, the adjustments follow PURC's quarterly tariff review, which reflects changes in key economic and operational factors affecting utility service providers. In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Commission explained that its quarterly review tracks movements in indicators such as the exchange rate, domestic inflation, electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel.
The statement from PURC highlighted that the revisions are aimed at maintaining the real value of tariffs, ensuring that utility service providers remain financially viable while continuing to deliver reliable services to consumers. The Commission emphasized the importance of these adjustments in sustaining the quality and dependability of utility services.
As part of the recent review, PURC applied a projected weighted average exchange rate of GHS11.1931 to US$1 for the second quarter of 2026. This rate is based on the three-month interbank average recorded between December 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026, representing a 6.78% reduction from the previous quarter's rate of GHS12.0067 to the dollar.
