Obuasi: The Ministry of Education has condemned the violent attack on the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Abdulai Zakaria, after six students were arrested in connection with a rampage at the school. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after some students accused the headmaster of engaging in ritual activities on the school campus.
According to Ghana Web, the Ministry of Education described the students' conduct as "reprehensible and criminal," emphasizing that violence and lawlessness have no place in Ghanaian educational institutions. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to conduct a full investigation and apply appropriate disciplinary sanctions against all persons found culpable.
The Ministry stated it would collaborate with the GES and other state institutions to uphold discipline and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for teaching and learning. Information gathered revealed that one student claimed to have spotted Zakaria's Toyota RAV4, with registration number AC 127-23, near a refuse dump on the school premises, leading to suspicions and the subsequent violent confrontation.
The students allegedly claimed they had discovered what appeared to be a freshly buried baby at the site. They subsequently confronted the headmaster, physically assaulted him, and later stormed his bungalow, where they vandalized property, including his vehicle. Zakaria reportedly sustained multiple injuries in the attack and has since been admitted to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he is receiving treatment.
