Accra: Economic transformation is a national project that requires discipline, trust, and shared responsibility across the Government, the private sector, labor, civil society, and development partners, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized. She made these remarks during the inauguration of the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE), conducted by President John Dramani Mahama.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Advisory Group is chaired by the President, with the Vice President acting as Chairman in the absence of the President, in line with constitutional requirements. The Vice President expressed gratitude on behalf of PAGE to the President for his foresight in establishing this advisory group. She noted that after a period of acute strain, visibility is being retained, and confidence is gradually rebuilding.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang stated, "Even as we continue to navigate global and domestic challenges, this moment must be used not only to recover but to reset our economic direction." She added that the advisory body's mandate is to provide rigorous and practical advice to support the Government, complementing existing institutions by offering insights and proposing solutions grounded in Ghana's realities.
The commitment of PAGE is to move from crisis management to durable success, fostering dialogue, intellectual honesty, and collective responsibility. The Vice President emphasized the importance of engaging across sectors and delivering actionable advice aligned with Ghana's long-term development vision.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that the Advisory Group comprises professionals from various backgrounds and disciplines. She urged her colleagues to reflect on what the economy should mean to citizens, emphasizing stability, fair prices, reliable markets, and predictable costs as crucial components. She reiterated the need to make the economy feel more like everyday possibilities for the people.
In her closing remarks, the Vice President stressed the importance of recognizing the concrete effects of the economy on people's lives, such as the safety of water and the reliability of electricity. She pledged to provide independent, thorough, and practical leadership to support the collective effort towards economic transformation.
