Kumasi: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans for a major transformer upgrade at the Kumasi Ridge Substation, aiming to enhance power reliability and service quality in the area. This maintenance work is set to occur from Wednesday, May 6, to Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the upgrade is part of the government's Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme, which seeks to alleviate pressure on the distribution network and reinforce infrastructure. The project will replace the existing 20/26MVA power transformer with a new 30/39MVA unit to increase capacity.
The Kumasi Ridge initiative follows similar upgrades completed at various other substations, including Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua Primary Substations. To ensure safe engineering activities, customers in the Kumasi Ridge area will experience scheduled power outages over the four-day period, with interruptions lasting approximately six hours depending on the daily work schedule.
The utility company anticipates several long-term improvements from the upgrade, such as increased supply capacity for the area, reduced system overloads and equipment failures, minimized frequency and duration of future outages, and enhanced voltage stability. ECG plans to disseminate detailed outage schedules through its official communication channels and has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the temporary interruptions, emphasizing the necessity of the project for ongoing infrastructure improvement and proactive maintenance of the power distribution network.
