Kumasi: The management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that the upgrading of key sub-transmission lines in Greater Kumasi is set to be completed by June 5, 2026. The project involves critical upgrades to enhance the electricity supply in the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the statement signed by Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications at ECG, detailed that the upgrades include the line from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation, as well as the line from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi. The completion of these projects is expected to significantly improve power supply reliability and voltage quality, benefiting areas such as Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, Bekwai, and their surrounding communities.
The statement further explained that part of the upgrade involves replacing the existing 265 square millimetre (sqmm) conductors with 400 sqmm conductors. This replacement, along with the upgrade of weak cables, aims to enhance power transfer capacity and improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply across Greater Kumasi.
Dr. Ayiku highlighted that the project would also reinforce the sub-transmission link between Kumasi One (K1) and Kumasi Two (K2) Bulk Supply Points. This enhancement is intended to improve the overall network resilience within the Ashanti Region. He also issued an apology to the residents for any inconvenience caused during the project's execution, emphasizing that these temporary challenges are necessary for achieving a more reliable electricity supply in the region.
