Kumasi: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited has revived two key stalled projects in Kumasi to improve the supply of quality and stable power to citizens.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kwame Kpekpena, the Managing Director of ECG, stated that the key stalled projects include the construction of a link from the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) to Kaase and a link from the Ridge Bulk Supply Point to the Neoplan Primary Substation to Barekese. Mr. Kpekpena made this announcement while leading a team of officials from ECG on a working visit to Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister. The purpose of the visit was to update the Minister on the ongoing system upgrading projects that the ECG is undertaking in the region to enhance power supply quality.
Mr. Kpekpena explained that the projects have been revived due to challenges faced in the power supply within the region, including capacity constraints at various substations and feeders. These constraints have led to frequent power outages and low voltage issues. The Anwomaso BSP to Kaase project is expected to be completed within the year to improve power capacity in the town center. Additionally, the Ridge BSP to Neoplan Primary Substation to Barekese project aims to supply stable power to the Barekese Dam site, ensuring consistent water treatment for the region's citizens.
Funding issues had previously halted these projects until government funds were made available this year. Mr. Kpekpena noted that three percent of the revenue collected by the ECG through the Cash Waterfall system is now allocated to support project completion. He assured that the Anwomaso BSP to Kaase project would be completed within six to eight weeks.
In addition to these projects, Mr. Kpekpena disclosed plans for replacing the overloaded Ridge BSP transformer and the entire switchboard. To expedite the work, ECG is flying in key components like the switchgear to boost capacity before the entire project completion. The completion of these projects is expected to strengthen the capacity of their systems, providing stable power to the region's residents.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene commended the ECG's management for their efforts in ensuring stable power supply and encouraged them to communicate effectively with the public regarding their projects and maintenance plans. This communication is crucial to counter false narratives about ECG's intentions and the government's performance.
