Drivers Call for Urgent Rehabilitation of Sunyani-Atronie Highway to Control Robberies

Sunyani: Commercial drivers using the Atronie-Sunyani highway on Monday appealed for urgent rehabilitation of the deplorable road to stem the growing incidents of armed robbery on the stretch.

According to Ghana News Agency, their appeal comes in the wake of an armed robbery incident, which happened on the highway last Friday, June 13, 2025. In that incident, a group of armed robbers stormed the highway in broad daylight, robbing passengers of their valuables and fatally shooting one person.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Atronie, the drivers expressed worry that armed robberies were rampant on the road nowadays, as the robbers capitalize on the current bad condition of the road to attack drivers and commuters. ‘They often attacked us at some particular spots where it is very difficult to drive through because of the potholes,’ Mr. Sampson Akwasivi, one of the drivers, stated, adding that the situation had caused fear and panic among drivers and commuters who used the road.

Another driver, Osofo Ayittey, called on the police to beef up security patrols along the stretch, saying, ‘the armed robbers hide in the forest and attack us in the afternoons and evenings.’
