Accra, July 3, GNA – Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Ghana’s former Ambassador to the United States, has been decorated with an honorary black belt title at the African Goju Martial Arts Awards.
The renowned politician was honoured with the black belt for his contribution to the growth of martial arts in Ghana.
Speaking to the media after receiving his black belt, Dr. Spio-Garbrah was grateful to Professor Danny Gwira, founder of the Martial Arts Institute, for the recognition.
“I began training in martial arts in the early 1970s during my days at the University of Ghana and am considered one of the pioneers of the arts.
“One thing that kept me involved in martial arts was that it kept me very disciplined, especially in some specific emotional moments, and it also keeps you healthy.
“It helps you manage your body and your relationship with others in terms of being patient and not getting easily provoked by others,” he said.
He also congratulated all members of African Goju who were inducted into the Hall of Fame for their respective contributions to the growth of martial arts.
Mr. Patrick Mintah, a sixth-degree black belt holder, won the Reg Gwira Martial Artist of the Year while George Heward-Mills won the Kata Award.
