Denu (VR), July 13, GNA- Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South has cut sod for the construction of a community centre to serve as a temporary holding shelter for victims of tidal waves.
The facility, which would have an office, a kitchen, a storeroom, three toilets, three bathrooms and a big hall to accommodate several people in the event of any devastation would also provide shelter to some displaced constituents who now seek shelter from Churches and classrooms.
The MP in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the project, expected to also serve as a vocational training centre for the coastal communities upon completion, formed part of her efforts to find “a lasting solution for the victims of the tidal wave devastation” along the coast in her constituency.
Madam Gomashie disclosed the source of funding for the project as the seed money of GH¢100,000.00 donation by African World Airlines through Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State.
She also mentioned an amount of GH¢5,000.00 from the Catholic Women Council, 100 bags of cement donated by the Senators and earlier donations of cement she lobbied from the Inter-denomination Church at the University of Ghana.
“Our doors are still open to anyone; Ghanaian citizens, corporate Ghana and supporters of Sustainable Development Goals of the UN for donations in support of this project,” Madam Gomashie appealed.
Mr Kingsley Oduro, Ketu South Municipal Engineer who was at the sod cutting ceremony at Agavedzi, one of the coastal communities estimated the community centre to be ready for use in six months barring any unforeseen situation.
Torgbui Akponogui IV, Chief of Agavedzi was grateful to the MP for her lobbying skills and commitment to the welfare of the people which was resulting in the project and indicated his joy for providing the land as the community’s contribution towards the project.
Mr Eben Assah, Assembly member for Agavedzi lauded the MP for the project, which he expected will offer relief to residents along the entire Ketu South coastline in times of disaster and provide alternative livelihoods to the people and prayed for the needed resources for its timely completion.
