Derrick Kohn and Other Shining Stars from Black Stars Friendlies

Accra: Despite the criticisms and mixed reactions following the Black Stars' two defeats in the international friendlies in March 2026, some players showcased their potential. The Black Stars lost 5-1 to Austria in their first friendly, a performance that was nothing to write home about. However, they quickly recovered to put up an impressive display against Germany, even though they eventually lost 2-1.

According to Ghana Web, these two games provided several players with the opportunity to prove themselves and make a case for their inclusion in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and some delivered effectively. Derrick Arthur Kohn, a Union Berlin defender, lasted the entire duration of the game against Germany at the MHF Arena in Stuttgart. He assisted Abdul Fatawu Issahaku's equalizer in the 70th minute. The 27-year-old's performance in his third appearance for the Black Stars drew attention from Ghanaians, who praised him despite the team's defeat. Kohn was the second top rated Ghanaian player in the game after goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

Prince Kwabena Adu, a Viktoria Plzen forward, showed glimpses of potential to lead the attack for the team at the World Cup. He demonstrated the ability to find space in tight areas and remain calm during tense moments, which added flexibility to the team's attack. Although many of his shots failed to hit the target, he showed confidence by continuing to shoot under pressure. If he sharpens his finishing, he could become the main striker for the Black Stars.

Caleb Yirenkyi delivered an impressive performance against Germany after a challenging outing against Austria. He started the game in midfield and helped the team retain possession, though the Black Stars struggled initially. As the Germans pressed, Yirenkyi was shifted back to the right-back position. He played a crucial role in helping Ghana withstand the pressure, blocking shots and making important clearances. His defensive awareness and ability to win possession without fouling were noteworthy.
