Accra: Ghanaian media personality Dan Kwaku Yeboah has shared some of the memorable and amusing experiences he had with the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba. Speaking during a performance at the DYK comedy night, Yeboah recounted a notable incident involving the musician at a show held at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
According to Ghana Web, Dan Kwaku Yeboah recalled that Daddy Lumba and his colleagues were transported from the airport in a convertible car as they headed to the stadium, where a large crowd of fans awaited their arrival. Organisers had anticipated that Lumba would stand in the vehicle and wave to the fans at the stadium's entrance. However, much to their surprise, he did not.
Yeboah mentioned that when the driver informed Daddy Lumba of their arrival at the stadium, the musician's response was unexpected. Lumba questioned whether the driver thought he was unaware of their location, instructing the driver to continue moving the car. The musician appeared indifferent to whether fans would enter the stadium or not, stating that if they chose not to come in, it was their decision.
Yeboah also recounted another incident involving a Christmas concert that Daddy Lumba organised in Kumasi. Despite high anticipation and ticket sales, when Lumba appeared on stage, he informed the audience that he could not perform due to dissatisfaction with the sound system. Nonetheless, Yeboah noted that the musician's popularity ensured that fans would still attend his future performances.
The comedian reflected on the prevalence of false reports about Daddy Lumba's death that circulated during the musician's lifetime. He criticised the tendency of some Ghanaians to speculate about Lumba's death without verifying the information. Yeboah shared an instance where rumours of Lumba's death spread after people failed to reach him by phone. However, when Yeboah called, Lumba answered and advised him to disregard such rumours.
Yeboah expressed that those who had worked closely with Daddy Lumba would understand the musician's unique personality. He concluded by expressing sadness over Lumba's passing, noting that the music icon was expected to appear on his show before his death. Yeboah acknowledged Lumba's legendary status and the impact he had on those who encountered him.
