Accra:The Portuguese Football Federation has imposed a 30-day suspension on Cristiano Ronaldo following his departure from the national team camp due to a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus regarding his role in the squad.
According to Ghana Web, Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, was also fined 255 euros (£189) after the federation's disciplinary council fully upheld the charges against him on Monday, October 19, 2026.
Ronaldo left the Portugal camp in September before their Nations League match against Denmark after learning he would not be starting. Previously, he had been an unused substitute against Norway, which led to his frustration. In a statement, Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking his word twice and described the situation as a breach of trust.
Initially, the Portuguese Football Federation provisionally suspended Ronaldo on October 9 until the disciplinary process was concluded. The council stated that Ronaldo intentionally committed an offence under Article 160(1) of its regulations. However, it did not specify which matches or activities the suspension would cover or whether the provisional suspension time would count toward the final penalty.
After the incident, Ronaldo apologized for not acknowledging supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates, expressing his willingness to rejoin the national team after serving any punishment. The president of the Portuguese FA, Pedro Proenca, has indicated that the federation wants Ronaldo to return to the national squad once the issue is resolved.
