Oyibi: A report focusing on flood impact in the Oyibi community emphasizes the need for coordinated action to mitigate flooding risks in the area. The report highlights that such measures are crucial in safeguarding lives, property, and the development of the community.
According to Ghana News Agency, the survey was conducted by Concerned Students led by Mr. Bright Amosah, with support from the Global Greengrants Fund. It involved interviews with residents, municipal officials, the National Disaster Management Organisation, and traditional leaders. The findings reveal that flooding has become a significant environmental and humanitarian issue in Oyibi, necessitating immediate attention.
The report identifies several causes of flooding, including inadequate drainage systems, obstructed waterways, unregulated construction on water channels, and the community's sloping terrain that channels rainwater rapidly into low-lying areas. The Fleeton Pharmacy stretch, the Aluminium Factory vicinity, and the Okofuo area are noted as the most flood-prone zones.
Nana Nii Boye Okashong, the Oyibi Chief, stressed the importance of sustainable solutions such as modern drainage systems and stricter enforcement of building regulations. He also urged residents to practice proper sanitation and refrain from dumping waste into gutters.
Community members expressed frustration with the frequent flooding, which causes water to enter homes and damage household property during heavy rains. Some residents attributed the exacerbation of erosion and water accumulation to untarred roads and ongoing construction activities.
Flooding is a common occurrence in the country, particularly during the peak rainy months of May, June, and July. Stakeholders involved in the survey recommend constructing large storm drains, enhancing drainage maintenance, implementing proper spatial planning, and fostering better collaboration among government agencies, NGOs, and local leaders. They advocate for long-term interventions to improve the situation.
