St John's:Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, has announced a new Commonwealth Nature Initiative aimed at restoring habitats and addressing environmental degradation during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St John's, Antigua and Barbuda.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative includes funding support to enhance climate resilience across member states. Madam Botchwey emphasized the urgent need for action, highlighting the impact of the El Niño phenomenon and the disproportionate effects of climate-related disasters on countries that have contributed the least to climate change.
The Secretary-General proposed a two-pronged approach to tackle the climate challenge. This involves collaboration with the private sector to unlock new capital and financing mechanisms to support renewable energy investments in fiscally constrained countries. She also underscored the importance of working with insurers to expedite payouts following disasters.
Madam Botchwey highlighted the spirit of cooperation within the Commonwealth, reflecting the motto of Antigua and Barbuda, 'Each Endeavouring, All Achieving.' She called for collective efforts, stressing that democratic cooperation benefits all member nations, regardless of size.
The CHOGM, themed 'Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,' is attended by President John Dramani Mahama. The Commonwealth, led by King Charles III, comprises 56 independent countries, home to approximately 2.7 billion people, including 33 small states.
