Kumasi: The Coalition of Zongo Youth (CZY) in the Ashanti Region has called on the government to safeguard indigenous businesses to promote economic growth and protect the interests of local investors. The group emphasized that protecting Ghanaian-owned enterprises is crucial for sustaining livelihoods, reducing youth unemployment, and advancing national development.
According to Ghana News Agency, at a press conference held at the Kumasi Central Mosque, the coalition expressed concern over what it described as disturbing developments surrounding the reported takeover of a private jet terminal belonging to the McDan Group of Companies. While commending the government's efforts to accelerate economic growth, the coalition stressed the need to ensure policy consistency and protect businesses from disruptions that could undermine investor confidence.
The coalition noted that the McDan Group, led by Daniel McKorley, has contributed significantly to national development, particularly within Zongo communities. The company has provided scholarships to brilliant but needy students, extended soft loans to women entrepreneurs, and implemented skills training and youth empowerment programs.
Mr. Sumaila Ali, Convener of the press conference and a beneficiary of the scholarship scheme, stated that the Zongo youth remain committed to peace, development, and constructive engagement with business stakeholders. He emphasized that protecting patriotic Ghanaian investors would serve the national interest and help sustain economic opportunities for young people.
Also speaking at the event, Hajia Umaima Ibrahim, Head of the Zongo Queen Mothers Association in Kumasi, urged the government to ensure fairness, transparency, and due process in all matters involving the McDan Group. She cautioned against actions that could be perceived as politically motivated, stressing that local businesses must be supported to thrive.
The coalition further called on religious leaders, traditional authorities, and civil society organizations to advocate justice, fairness, and national unity in resolving issues concerning the company.
