Ghana: Ghana Premier League clubs have expressed shock and grief following the death of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong after the club's team bus was attacked by armed robbers, prompting calls for a swift investigation and improved security for teams.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Frimpong's death after the incident, which occurred as Berekum Chelsea were returning from a week 29 league match against FC Samartex 1996.
Berekum Chelsea reported that the team bus was blocked on the road from Samreboi to Berekum by armed robbers, leading to an attack that left Frimpong dead and others injured.
Accra Hearts of Oak expressed concern over the attack and extended solidarity to Berekum Chelsea, describing the incident as traumatic and unacceptable. The club emphasized that no club, player, or football official should have to endure such an experience, urging for a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
Asante Kotoko SC expressed sadness over the loss of Dominic Frimpong, offering condolences to his family and Berekum Chelsea. The club also called on authorities to ensure the safety and security of all clubs following the incident.
FC Samartex 1996, Berekum Chelsea's opponents, described Frimpong's death as a tragedy for the entire Ghanaian football community. The club emphasized unity in grief and offered support to the bereaved family and Berekum Chelsea's playing and technical staff.
Other clubs, including Aduana Stars, Medeama, and Gold Stars, among others, also expressed condolences to Berekum Chelsea and all stakeholders in the football fraternity.
