Tema: The Chinese Government has lauded Ghana for its firm commitment to achieving energy self-reliance. Cong Song, the Chinese Ambassador, emphasized China's support for this mission, aligning with a shared pursuit of win-win cooperation.
According to Ghana Web, Cong Song highlighted Ghana's strategic move to end raw mineral exports by 2030 and to locally process crude oil from the Jubilee Oil Field. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards industrial upgrading and adding greater value to Ghana's natural resources.
The Ambassador made these comments during the commissioning of Phase Two of the Sentuo Oil Refinery Project in Tema. This project aims to expand refining capacity from 40,000 to 100,000 barrels per day, thereby strengthening Ghana's energy and industrial sectors. The expansion is part of a larger initiative by the Chinese conglomerate Sentuo Group to enhance the existing refinery in the Tema Industrial Area.
The Phase Two expansion is designed to increase domestic fuel production and reduce Ghana's reliance on imported refined petroleum products. It also aims to enhance Ghana's position as a regional energy hub and a leading refining center in West Africa.
Cong Song noted that the commissioning of this project not only advances Ghana's petrochemical industry but also symbolizes the strong commitment of Chinese enterprises to the industrialization and modernization of Ghana. He expressed optimism that the project would improve Ghana's refining capacity, petroleum value chain, and energy security while deepening economic partnerships.
Guided by the consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President John Mahama in Beijing last October, China and Ghana have further deepened their strategic partnership and advanced mutually beneficial cooperation. President John Mahama attended the commissioning ceremony, underscoring the significance of this bilateral collaboration.
