Kintampo: Sheikh Yussif Baba Tanko, the Kintampo Municipal Chief Imam in the Bono East Region, has called on the government to create an independent or separate ministry for religious affairs. Addressing thousands of Muslims gathered for the Eid-ul-Adha celebration at Kintampo, he emphasized that the current blend of religious affairs with local government in a single ministry was not benefiting the chieftaincy institution.
According to Ghana News Agency, Sheikh Tanko highlighted that peace is essential for development and described religion as the "master card of peace." He argued that a dedicated ministry for religious affairs would promote and strengthen the nation's prevailing peace. Furthermore, he stated that such a ministry would enhance policy formulation and good governance in the country.
Sheikh Tanko also used the occasion to advise Muslim youth to respect their elders and avoid engaging in lawless behavior. Nana Yusif Koulibaly Fanyinamah III, the Wangara Paramount Chief of the Kintampo Traditional Area, supported Sheikh Tanko's call. He noted that the current ministry is overwhelmed with policy decisions due to its responsibility for three distinct areas. Nana Fanyinamah III suggested that separating religious affairs from local government would significantly aid policy formulation and implementation.
Additionally, Nana Fanyinamah III praised the government for the extensive infrastructural development being carried out nationwide. He appealed to the government to ensure that the Kintampo Traditional Area receives its fair share of national development projects.
