NPP polls: Probe vote-buying, corruption claims – Mahama Ayariga to Special Prosecutor

The Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has petitioned the Special Prosecutor to probe vote-buying allegations reported at the recently-held regional delegates conference of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“I write to draw your attention to widespread reports in the social media which were equally discussed on the radio, that the offences of corruption, bribery and undue influence did take place at the congresses of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect regional executives of the NPP,” the petition said.

The opposition MP, who is relying on the Representation of the People Law, 1992 (PNDCL 284) as the basis for his petition, also urged the Ghana Police Service to investigate the allegations and “develop tools for policing elections to political parties’ offices with a view to nipping corruption in the bud.”

One of the regional chair contestants for the Ashanti Region, Mr Robert Asare Bediako, after the election, confessed to paying GHS1,000 to each of the over 800 delegates that took part in the conference but still lost.

The incumbent, Mr Barnard Antwi Boasiako, got retained.

Chairman Wontumi, as Mr Boasiako is called in political circles, polled 464 votes to beat his main contender Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, (COKA), who got 306 votes.

Mr Asare Bediako managed 22 votes while the other contenders, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi and Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah polled 9 and 3 votes, respectively.

Speaking to Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show, GhanAkoma, on Monday, 30 May 2022, Mr Bediako said “while I was paying each delegate GH¢1,000, I thought I would win but some paid more than me so the delegates also gave in to the highest bidder and it’s very worrying the trend of monetisation in our body politics”.

Samuel Kwame Boadu represents Berry Ladies FC at Betway Sports Marketing Summit

Entrepreneur and CEO of SamBoad Business Group Limited, Samuel Kwame Boadu, has represented Ghanaian women’s football team Berry Ladies FC at this year’s Betway Sports Marketing Summit.

Speaking at the summit, Mr Boadu pointed out that “I remain a committed member of Mrs. Gifty Oware -Mensah’s flagship initiative in women’s football, Berry Ladies FC, because it deals directly with three themes very close to my heart – Technology in Sports, Job Creation and Gender Equality. At this year’s Betway Sports Marketing Summit which took place at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra and the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi with the two venues linked up through video conferencing, we retained our attention on technology in sports while also broadening our focus to address diversity and gender inclusion in Sports.”

He added, “Technology in Sports is the leading accelerator for economic transformation and development. From efficient ticket payment systems, Live telecasts of matches, digital marketing to access to data that fosters connection and collaboration at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) level— technology in sports is our new reality and it offers a world of opportunity and promise. But Africa especially Ghanaians cannot be left behind. Ghana Football Association needs this type of gathering.”

Elroy Salam and Samuel Kwame Boadu represented Berry Ladies FC, under Ghana Women’s Premier League and Ghana Football Association (GFA) to draw attention to young ones who seek economic hope and opportunity via technology in sports. “Technology in sports is a great employer of labour, technology in sports drives inclusiveness, technology in sports helps to alleviate poverty, but we must not forget that in Africa especially Ghana we are just starting out and we cannot afford to lag behind. We need the world to pay attention to Africa especially Ghana so that young Africans are not disenfranchised and left behind in this new technology in Sports era. We must address these issues holistically to fight poverty which as we all know is a threat to everyone everywhere hence continue to promote women in sports and enhance our way of marketing these teams to attract more investors and stakeholders.”

Julia Stuart

Samuel Kwame Boadu challenged and urged the Betway Ghana representatives and the representatives of the Ghana Women’s Premier League(GWPL) to keep close attention to the activities of their players on social media. This was supported and agreed by astute sports journalist, Michael Oti Adjei, adding that this will not only ensure discipline in the players’ ranks but also help in managing and consolidating the brands of the clubs.

Representatives from women’s football clubs in Ghana attended the event on Thursday, April 7, 2022, to learn skills to help them market their brands, secure sponsorship deals, enjoy public goodwill and engage better with fans.

“Every club seated here or those absent must be where their fans are. Whether you know them individually or not,” Samuel kwame Boadu said. “There are so many people sitting on social media. Your fans automatically sit there,” He added, urging them to develop content strategies that help to engage with the fans.

“You must always have a good content plan; it goes without saying. Having no content plan is like going to train and not having an idea what you are going to train on today; it doesn’t work like that,” Founder of SamBoad Business Group Limited, Samuel added.

Samuel Kwame Boadu also pointed out some mistakes that are commonly made by clubs on social media, stating there is a need for them to employ dedicated professional social media managers or Digital Marketers.

“You need community managers,” he said. “I know it’s difficult because we can’t pay our team managers and the rest but you can’t run a football club these days without social media managers. It doesn’t matter whether it is full time or part-time, get somebody whose commitment is to give you presence on social media.”

“At SamBoad Business Group Limited, we have led in committing to Tech and Job creation especially Digital Marketing. Our digital marketing training for Ghanaian entrepreneurs demonstrates the possibilities that can be unlocked in our country when we leverage technology in business, investment and social good. Our firm’s partnership with Priority Insurance Company, a leading Insurance firm in Ghana and Coco Vanilla Restaurants, Berry Ladies FC etc. is a demonstration of what can be achieved when the digital revolution is democratised – personal empowerment, business growth, equitable bilateral relationships and a more gender balanced and inclusive society. I thank my good friend and CEO, Gifty Oware-Aboagye, for this wonderful opportunity to champion the tech and sports marketing side of Berry Ladies FC, while reconnecting with old friends here at the Betway Ghana summit,” Samuel Kwame Boadu concluded.

Speaking on how to attract prospective sponsors, renowned sports marketer and former Hearts of Oak, Managing Director Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe opined that women’s football clubs must use their unique attributes to project their brand identity.

He counselled teams in the Women’s Premier League to improve their relationship with sponsors and other club partners to better their chances of securing major sponsorship deals.

Julia Stuart, a presenter from South African TV outfit, SuperSport, who was another trainer at the workshop, advised footballers and club executives to strive to set themselves apart from the masses by paying attention to branding.

“Personal Branding is the practice of marketing people and their careers as brands. It’s an ongoing process of developing and maintaining a reputation and impression of an individual group or organisation,” she explained. She iterated that having a strong brand and social media presence can create an avenue for sportsmen to leverage their identities to work as brand ambassadors or promotors because “we live in an age of influencers where people have found new ways of making money in the digital space.”

The sports presenter cited some sports personalities who have built strong personal brands over the years such as Jack Grealish, Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, Ian Wright and others whom she said are “focused, consistent and authentic”.

Chief Executive Officer of South African sports agency, Forwardzone, Ashley Kotzin on his part advised Ghanaian women’s football clubs to build a formidable brand because it is key to attracting sponsors who play a crucial role in every sport.

“As we know in the sporting ecosystem, we need sponsors, we need funding. Generally, money is the key that can tie all our great plans together,” he said.

He stressed, “Oftentimes we have excellent plans, excellent strategic ideas but we know that we need to have partners to make that happen.”

Mr Kotzin defined sports marketing as: “the marketing strategy which is aimed at promoting sports events, products, teams, services and athletes. The ability to build and develop brands that partners or sponsors would want to be involved with, so the development of your leagues, programmes, teams, athletes and brands; all of these things are potentially marketable commodities that we can find sponsors for.”

“The mentorship training programme was created to equip, empower and inspire the development of women’s football in Ghana. We are excited to be making an impact in women’s football through the upliftment of Ghana’s Women’s Premier League. It was good to touch base again with leaders in Ghana Women Football Association and I believe this is a good start to help lift publicity in women’s football, bringing back the Love in Ghana. Berry Ladies Football Club also known as Berries is a Ghanaian professional women’s football club based in Accra in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana doing exploit in Ghana Football,” Mr Kotzin emphasised.

My PA lied about me burning $50,000 – Moesha Boduong

Socialite turned born again Christian, Moesha Boduong has responded to allegations made by her assistant, Samuel Nelson after reports about her giving her life to Jesus Christ had gone viral.

In July 2021, an audio leak purported to be that of Nelson in a phone conversation with actress Salma Mumin made several allegations including claims that Moesha dashed out a chunk of her money and even burnt her GHC50,000 to ashes.

“Do you know Moesha burnt over GHC50000 to ashes,” he disclosed in the audio?

According to him, Moesha was influenced to burn the money by her pastor.

“I went to the VGMAs and because it was Mona’s birthday I went to Twist Night Club. When I came back home I saw ashes in the kitchen. I asked the stepmother what happened and she said the pastors came. She was like I don’t know how to say this…Moesha burnt over GHC5000,” he alleged.

Nelson further alleged that the church influenced Moesha to give out her other properties indicating that they took monies from her because she was told she needed to give out her “blood money”

“She was to go to Nigeria to see her senator boyfriend and she missed her flight. So she was calling him on video and she saw the man with blood all over him like occult stuff. The man call her and told her not to tell anyone but Moesha can’t keep her mouth shut….I told Moesha you have come to church, let the pastor rather see something and tell you, if you tell them it is like you are rather giving them information and they will stand on that. That was ehen they started asking for $2000 and she stood up. After that she was still giving them money; $3000, $2000,” he alleged.

“The money in your account is blood money give out the money they keep telling her and she drained all the money in her dollar account,” he added

But Moesha in an interview with Peacefmonline denied all that was said in Nelson’s audio. She said it was a lie.

“All that Nelson said were fabricated stories and I would personally invite him to an interview and make him publicly confess to the general public. I am never all that my PA said about me. I only accept the story about Salma because …she openly fought me online for the whole world to see. God is king.”

We lost to a stronger team – Madagascar coach after losing against Black Stars

Head coach of the Madagascar national team, Nicolas Dupuis has admitted that the Black Stars were strong for his side.

The Barea suffered a 3-0 defeat against Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] opener on Wednesday night.

Goals from Mohammed Kudus, Afena-Gyan, and Osman Bukari were enough as the Black Stars picked all three points.

Speaking after the game, Dupuis commended Ghana for the victory as well as the qualification to the World Cup which will be held in Qatar in November.

“I said that we came here for business when you are going into a battle you can’t say that you are going to lose. We fought and we lost. We met a strong team who are ready to go for the World Cup and once again I congratulate them on the win. We were too young and I believe they will learn more lessons from this game,” he said.

He also clarified that his team were undone by his inexperience. He emphasized the hope that his players will learn from the defeat and bounce back stronger.

The captain of the Bareas was full of praise for his teammates but noted that they were undone by inexperience.

“In the first, we defended well but the Ghanaian attackers were too fast. We tried to contain them but in the second half, we couldn’t. Most of our players are young and were playing their first international match so they did well. We were beaten and we accept it,” he said.

Madagascar were handed a hammering by Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Ghana have leaped to the top of Group E following the win. The Black Stars, in their second group game, will play as guests in the Central Africa Republic on June 5, 2022.

Two persons granted bail for alleged dishonestly receiving

Accra, May 02, GNA – Two persons have been granted bail in the sum of GHS80,000.00 each with three sureties by an Accra Circuit Court for alleged dishonestly receiving.

Mr Amos Arhin, aged 35 and Mr Kwame Kusi, aged 48, both traders, pleaded not guilty.

Solomon Emmanuel, aged 30, porter, has also been charged with three counts, namely, causing damage, unlawful entry and stealing, but he failed to appear before the court for his plea to be taken.

The Court, therefore, issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The case had been adjourned to June 16, 2022.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Clement Takyi told the court presided over by Mr Evelyn Asamoah that the complainant was Mr Stephen Ejike, a trader at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and a resident of Ogbojo.

The Prosecution said Emmanuel was a porter and a squatter at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange whilst Mr Arhin and Mr Kusi were both traders also at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and resided at Teshie and Pokuase, respectively.

Inspector Takyi said on March 23, 2022, at about 0700 hours, Mr Ejike arrived at his wholesale shop at the Interchange and detected that the door lock to his shop was damaged and his assorted mobile phone accessories including 400 pieces of two-gigabyte memory cards valued GHS5,000.00 had been stolen.

He said the complainant also realised that 400 pieces of eight-gigabyte memory cards valued GHS6,400.00, 400, pieces of 16-gigabyte memory cards valued GHS7,600.00, and 1680 pieces of android cables valued GHS8,064.00, 750 pieces of assorted phone chargers valued GHS8,625.00 had been taken away.

“1850 pieces of hands-free valued GHS10,175.00 all to the total value of GHS45,864.00 were stolen,” he said.

The Prosecution said Mr Ejike upon suspicion, conducted the arrest of Emmanuel and took him to the Holy Gardens Police Station located at Interchange and lodged a complaint against him.

Inspector Takyi said Emmanuel admitted to the offence in his caution statement and led the Police to the selling point of Mr Arhin and Mr Kusi and pointed them out as the persons he sold the items to.

A search conducted in Mr Arhin, and Mr Kusi’s selling point revealed a total number of 11 assorted mobile phone chargers, and they admitted buying them from Emmanuel and the same was retrieved and kept as evidence.

Rudiger completes free transfer move from Chelsea to Real Madrid

Chelsea have confirmed that Germany defender Antonio Rudiger has left the club to join European champions Real Madrid.

Rudiger, 29, joined the Premier League club in 2017 from Roma and became one of the stalwarts of the defence as well as a leader in the dressing room.

The centre back helped the team win the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

However with the club’s ownership recently uncertain before Todd Boehly’s consortium completed their takeover Rudiger decided it was time to move on.

He was linked with a move to both Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as German champions Bayern Munich, before eventually plumping for the La Liga and Champions League winners.

Real confirmed the move, adding that it will be a four-year contract with no option.

Rudiger will join a central defensive unit that contains David Alaba and Eder Militao as well as club stalwart Nacho Fernandez.

He becomes Real’s first signing of the summer, having already very publicly missed out on PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

They are being heavily linked with a move for Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. Isco, Marcelo and Gareth Bale have all left the club on free transfers.

Kevin Spacey to appear before UK Court

Kevin Spacey says he will “voluntarily” appear in a UK court on five counts of sexual assault.

The ‘American Beauty’ star gave a statement to Good Morning America on Tuesday in which he said he was confident he could prove his innocence.

It was initially thought that Mr. Spacey might have to be extradited to the UK.

Five charges are to be brought against the 62-year-old after a review of Met Police evidence, following complaints made between 2005 and 2013.

“I very much appreciate the [Crown Prosecution’s] statement in which they carefully reminded the media and the public that I am entitled to a fair trial, and innocent until proven otherwise,” said Spacey in the statement.

“While I am disappointed with their decision to move forward, I will voluntarily appear in the UK as soon as can be arranged and defend myself against these charges, which I am confident will prove my innocence.”

The first two charges relate to alleged sexual assaults on a man, now in his 40s, in London in March 2005, while a second man, now in his 30s, is alleged to have been assaulted in London in August 2008.

The serious sexual offence charge – causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent – also relates to the second alleged victim.

A third man, who is now in his 30s, alleges assault in Gloucestershire in April 2013.

While the CPS authorised the charges against Mr. Spacey last week, it is understood he has not been formally charged as he is not currently in the UK.

Mr. Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner, starred in films such as ‘Seven’, ‘LA Confidential’, ‘American Beauty’ and ‘Baby Driver’, as well as the Netflix series ‘House of Cards’.

The actor was also the artistic director of the Old Vic in London between 2004 and 2015.
