BoG Positions Digital Innovation as Key Driver of Economic Growth

Accra: Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), emphasizes the pivotal role of digital innovation and financial technology in driving Ghana's economic transformation. He highlighted that innovation serves as a catalyst for productivity, inclusion, and sustainable growth within the global economy.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Asiama shared these insights during the 10th Ghana CEO Summit and Expo held in Accra. He noted that future-ready businesses are those that can rapidly adapt to technological advancements. The BoG is actively positioning itself at the forefront of digital financial innovation by establishing dedicated departments focusing on FinTech, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Assets.

The Governor elaborated on the bank's efforts to construct a modern and inclusive payment ecosystem, acknowledging the transformative impact of digital finance on payments, savings, credit, and remittance services. He emphasized that FinTech innovations are successfully reducing transaction costs and broadening financial inclusion throughout the country.

Significant progress has been made on Ghana's Central Bank Digital Currency project, the e-Cedi. The pilot phase has been successfully completed, and the initiative aims to enhance cross-border payments and strengthen payment system efficiency. Dr Asiama mentioned that the BoG is also integrating cloud computing, data analytics, and artificial intelligence in its operations.

While acknowledging the benefits of digital innovation, the Governor warned that such advancements must be underpinned by robust governance and cybersecurity measures. He stressed the importance of responsible and inclusive digitization.

Dr Asiama called on CEOs and business leaders to embrace technology-driven transformation and advocated for stronger public-private partnerships to foster innovation and industrialization. He underscored the need for Ghana to prioritize value addition, manufacturing, and competitiveness to ensure long-term prosperity.
