Accra: The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has emphasized the importance of collective action to create a digital-forward financial system fueled by innovation, aiming to enhance the welfare and prosperity of Ghanaians.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Asiama, speaking at the Financial Architecture Summit 2026 in Accra, highlighted that achieving this objective requires early collaboration among regulators, financial institutions, technology providers, and consumers. He stressed the need for institutions to take responsibility in this transformative process. The BoG Governor pointed out that the central bank is transitioning from a traditional supervisory approach to one that embraces innovation, aiming to strengthen the resilience of the broader financial ecosystem.
Dr. Asiama revealed that rural banks now serve over eight million Ghanaians, reflecting the reach and impact of financial services in the country. He explained that the regulatory philosophy of the central bank is evolving from focusing primarily on institutional supervision to considering ecosystem resilience.
He further elaborated on the necessity for effective supervision, which extends beyond monitoring individual financial institutions to understanding the interconnected systems they rely on. Dr. Asiama stated that this approach involves assessing both the condition of individual institutions and the dependencies that link them, which has influenced the central bank's focus on three priority areas.
The evolving regulatory framework aims to support a more resilient, innovative, and inclusive financial system, capable of meeting Ghana's future development needs.
