Accra: Black Stars Technical Advisor, Winfried Schaefer, has publicly endorsed goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the premier talent in the Ghana Premier League, cementing his role as the first-choice goalkeeper for the national team.
According to Ghana Web, Schaefer has been diligently observing domestic football by attending league matches and engaging with local coaches and players. This hands-on approach is part of his broader strategy to fortify the Black Stars. "Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars' first choice goalkeeper," Schaefer remarked in an interview with Medeama FM.
The seasoned German coach emphasized the importance of the local league as the backbone of Ghanaian football, advocating for a greater focus on nurturing home-grown talent. "The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe," he stated.
Schaefer also issued a challenge to domestic players, encouraging them to elevate their performance levels to secure opportunities with the national team. "I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars," he added.
