Black Stars technical advisor Chris Hughton names Michael Essien as his greatest Ghanaian footballer

Technical advisor of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has named former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as his all-time greatest Ghanaian footballer.

Essien following his move to the Premier League grabbed the headlines with his impressive performance

The now 39-year-old once won the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award during his stint at Lyon.

At Chelsea, he clinched two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy whilst forming a solid partnership with England legend Frank Lampard.

Hughton, who has met Essien on a few occasions, spoke highly of the former Black Stars player

“My all-time greatest Ghanaian footballer would be Michael Essien. One because he was in London so I saw a lot of him when he played,” he told TV in an interview.

“I had the pleasure to meet him on a few occasions and to speak with him but he was a very influential player in I think what was the turnaround in what we are seeing now at Chelsea,” he added.

Essien has now delved into coaching and now working with Danish side FC Nordsjaelland as an assistant.
