‘Be Frank, Independent and Evidence-Driven’ – Mahama Charges Economic Advisory Group

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has called on members of the newly inaugurated Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE) to provide honest, independent, and evidence-based advice as Ghana works to stabilize and rebuild its economy. Speaking at the group's inaugural ceremony on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, President Mahama stressed that Ghana's economic recovery requires more than political promises; it demands clear thinking, data-driven analysis, and bold but thoughtful policy direction.

According to Ghana Web, the President emphasized the importance of objective assessments and long-term planning in navigating the country's fiscal and structural challenges. 'Your counsel is expected to be frank, independent, and evidence-based,' President Mahama stated, urging the advisory team to recommend policy adjustments where necessary and to lend their expertise to Ghana's economic negotiations with bilateral and multilateral partners, international financial institutions, and investors.

In a period where global economic pressures remain high, the President noted that strategic insight and credible engagement are critical. President Mahama further directed that PAGE report directly to him, submitting advisory memoranda, briefs, and strategic reviews as needed. He emphasized that their guidance must always reflect the broader national interest rather than short-term considerations.

The formation of PAGE is expected to strengthen economic governance by giving the Presidency access to seasoned professionals with deep experience in finance, industry, academia, and global economic systems. The group brings together a distinguished team of respected figures from across Ghana's public and private sectors.

Members include Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang; veteran economist and private sector leader Kwame Pianim; and renowned industrialist Sir Samuel Esson Jonah. Other members are Ishmael Yamson, private sector leader and former PAGE member; Nana Oye Mansa Yeboaa, former Deputy Minister of Finance and Trade and Industry; Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, economist, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana and former Finance Minister; and Ato Brown, former World Bank Infrastructure Specialist and agribusiness investor.

The advisory group also includes Dr. Henry A. Kofi Wampah, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Togbe Afede XIV, economist and private sector leader; Abena Amoah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Stock Exchange; Prof. Priscilla Twumasi Baffour; and Prof. Patience Aseweh Abor - both respected academics and researchers.
