Be Careful Who You Have Children With, Akosua Ago Aboagye Advises Women

Accra: Broadcaster and General Manager of Sompa FM, Akosua Ago Aboagye, has advised women with career ambitions to be intentional about the partners they choose to build families with, emphasizing that a supportive spouse can make all the difference in balancing motherhood and professional growth. Speaking at the second edition of Convergence of Mothers, organized by media personality MzGee, the veteran broadcaster reflected on her own experience of navigating marriage, motherhood, higher education, and a demanding media career simultaneously.

According to Ghana Web, Ago Aboagye advised women who desire to advance in their careers to pay close attention to the character and mindset of the men they choose to marry and have children with. She emphasized the importance of selecting a partner who supports professional aspirations, stating, "If you have a desire to advance in your career, if you have a desire to do something for yourself, the man that you decide to have that baby with is so important."

Ago Aboagye shared her personal journey of pursuing a degree at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) while working as a broadcast journalist and programme host at Hello FM in Kumasi. Her responsibilities multiplied when she became pregnant and later gave birth, which created an enormous burden to manage. However, she credited her husband for being prepared to share the responsibility, recalling how he assisted with caring for their children and managing responsibilities at home while she continued to work and pursue her goals.

She noted that such support is often overlooked in conversations about successful women. "You cannot say that you want to have babies and advance in your career and then choose any man anyhow," she cautioned. The broadcaster observed that many women begin promising careers but struggle to sustain them due to a lack of adequate support at home. "I have seen a lot of media personalities. They started right, but the man they chose to marry, you can't find them anywhere anymore," she added.

Ago Aboagye stressed that while motherhood and career growth are both achievable, the journey becomes significantly easier when a woman's partner understands and supports her aspirations. For her, choosing a life partner is not only a romantic decision but also one that can have far-reaching consequences for a woman's personal and professional future.
