Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has named Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana's High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on March 1, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the appointment was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who took to X to congratulate Abu. "Congratulations, Baba Sadiq on your well-deserved appointment by President Mahama as High Commissioner designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have no doubt you will hold aloft Ghana's flag and make the youth of our continent proud," Ablakwa stated.
As the High Commissioner-designate, Abu is expected to spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing trade, cultural exchange, and diplomatic cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria. His role will officially commence following Nigeria's formal acceptance and the completion of standard diplomatic procedures.
The appointment of Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu follows the recall of the previous High Commissioner, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, known popularly as Baba Jamal. Jamal was recalled on February 7, 2026, after allegations of voter inducement emerged following his participation and victory in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
