Accra: Accra Technical University (ATU) Library has emerged victorious in an open science quiz competition against the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS), held as part of the 2024 International Open Science Week activities. ATU Library maintained a consistent lead throughout the competition, ultimately securing a six-point victory and receiving a trophy for their efforts.
According to Ghana News Agency, the competition began with ATU Library taking a narrow lead in the first round, which they extended to more than 10 points in the second round. Despite UGLS performing slightly better in the final round, ATU held on to their advantage. The International Open Science Week, jointly organized by the two libraries, aimed to raise awareness about Open Science in Ghana, promote diverse perspectives, and encourage innovative approaches to scientific information management and dissemination.
Mr. Donus Worlanyo Buadi, the Coordinator for the competition, noted that the event was launched on October 21, 2024,
at the University of Ghana Balme Library Seminar Room, followed by a float to raise awareness within the university community. The week also featured a panel discussion on the theme ‘Bankrolling Knowledge: Funding Open Science in Ghana’s Academic Libraries,’ which included officials from the University of Ghana, ATU, and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre. The week will conclude with a thanksgiving service at the Legon Interdenominational Church.
Madam Lorren Opoku-Larbi, the leader of the ATU team, expressed her excitement over the win, noting that even though the University of Ghana trained all the ATU team members, her team managed to outperform their ‘parents’. She emphasized that the competition’s focus should be on promoting Open Science in Ghana rather than just the victory.
