Atebubu: Traders and commercial drivers in the Bono East Region have called on the government to rebuild the collapsed Sataso Bridge at Adidwan on the Atebubu-Kumasi highway. The bridge's collapse, caused by a downpour two months ago, has led to the diversion of a significant portion of the highway.
According to Ghana News Agency, the collapse has significantly impacted local transportation. Mr. Takyi Yeboah, Chairman of the Atebubu Market Association, highlighted the issue in an interview, noting that transport fares have increased due to the necessary detour. "Drivers now charge exorbitant fares because of the diversion of the road," he said, explaining that the journey, which previously took two hours, now takes about five.
Mr. Yeboah expressed concern over the inaccessibility of the main highway, which forces drivers to detour through Techiman after Ejura to reach Kumasi. This extended route increases fuel consumption, contributing to the rise in transport costs.
Reconstructing the bridge, Mr. Yeboah argued, would ease transportation woes, lower transport fares, and enhance economic activities for traders and drivers in the region.
