Accra, June 22, GNA- Global Pharmaceutical Company, AstraZeneca, has donated prostate biopsy equipment worth nine thousand dollars to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to support prostate cancer diagnosis and management in the country.

The equipment donated includes reusable prostate biopsy guns and disposable prostate biopsy needles.

Mr Mawuli Emmanuel Atiemo, the Country Manager of the Company, said the gesture would support the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve the overall prostate diagnosis, understanding and results for patients.

He said the World Health Organisation in 2020 reported that a total of 2,129 new cases of prostate cancer were recorded in Ghana.

Mr Atiemo said this figure highlights the importance and urgency of ensuring that those at risk of prostate cancer have timely access to healthcare services, hence the donation to aid early diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Baffour Awuah, the Head, Medical and Dental Health, MOH representing the Minister, expressed appreciation to AstraZeneca for the gesture saying.

He said the Ministry recently passed the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) policy which talks about “early detection and management of non-communicable diseases.”

“This would go a long way to support the implementation of the Ministry’s NCD policy, which includes prostate cancer.”

“We therefore hope that the partnership will continue to make pharmaceutical products more affordable for patients after diagnosis,” Dr Awuah stated.
