Accra:The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns about the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, emphasizing that youth unemployment should not be used as an excuse for such destruction. He urged the adoption of responsible mining practices to safeguard the environment for current and future generations.
According to Ghana Web, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made these remarks during a visit to the Jimi River at AngloGold Ashanti Reclamation, part of the Jimi Land Reclamation and River Watercourse Rehabilitation Project. He was accompanied by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, and the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga. During the visit, the Asantehene planted trees and inspected the project's progress, highlighting efforts to restore areas degraded by unregulated mining activities.
The Asantehene also called on the government and traditional authorities to develop alternative employment opportunities for young people involved in illegal mining. He emphasized the necessity of addressing economic challenges while protecting the country's natural resources from further harm.
In addition, he advised the youth to move away from illegal mining, advocating for responsible practices that protect the environment and prevent potential loss of life. The Jimi reclamation project is part of the Ashanti Green Initiative, a result of Otumfuo's advocacy against illegal mining. This initiative brings together key partners, including the Manhyia Palace, Ashanti Green Initiative, and AngloGold Ashanti, to provide strategic direction and support for environmental rehabilitation efforts.
