Accra: Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has announced that illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, will be a critical focus in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) campaign for the 2028 general elections. He emphasized that the issue, which has significant implications for Ghana's water resources, particularly the Birim River, transcends political boundaries.
According to Ghana Web, Annoh-Dompreh shared these insights during an interview on Channel One TV on August 15, 2026. He argued that the destruction of water bodies due to illegal mining practices poses a severe threat to the livelihoods and survival of Ghanaians, making it a pressing issue that demands national attention.
Annoh-Dompreh stated, "Galamsey will form the core of the narrative of our campaign in 2028," highlighting the NPP's commitment to addressing the detrimental effects of illegal mining activities. He clarified that the party's focus on this issue is not merely a political strategy or a response to the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) previous campaigns but a crucial matter of public interest.
He underscored the importance of prioritizing the protection of water resources, saying, "Water is life. If today the Birim River is destroyed and we can't even get water, we need to talk about it." Annoh-Dompreh further stressed that addressing galamsey is essential for ensuring the survival and well-being of the nation, framing it as a humanitarian concern rather than a purely political one.
