Accra:The Anlo Youth Council (AYC) has expressed its support for Ms. Emelia Afi Agbenyo following her appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana. The Council commended Ms. Agbenyo, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the independence and neutrality of the Commission.
According to Ghana News Agency, the AYC released a statement praising Ms. Agbenyo as a distinguished member of the Anlo community with a strong record of public service. The Council highlighted her dedication to institutional development, effective administration, and inclusive governance, expressing confidence in her ability to serve the nation effectively.
The statement from the AYC came amidst public debate surrounding her appointment, which was made official by President John Dramani Mahama on October 12, 2026. Ms. Agbenyo's swearing-in, alongside Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, filled vacancies left by Dr. Bossman Asare's return to academia and Mr. Samuel Tettey's retirement. While Dr. Asamoah's appointment faced little opposition, Ms. Agbenyo's previous political affiliations with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) sparked discussions about her perceived neutrality.
Supporters of Ms. Agbenyo's appointment argued that her experience in public administration, particularly as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service, qualified her for the role. They also noted that Ghana's Constitution does not prohibit individuals with political backgrounds from serving on the EC.
The AYC emphasized the importance of maintaining the EC's independence and credibility, urging Ms. Agbenyo to uphold fairness, transparency, and professionalism. The Council expressed confidence that her upbringing in Anlo, rooted in integrity and community service, along with her national management experience, would guide her in her new role.
The Council concluded by affirming its support for Ms. Agbenyo, recognizing her capabilities and commitment to responsible public service.
