Keta: Teachers and students of Anlo-Afiadenyigba Senior High School (AFIASEC), located in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, have made an urgent appeal to authorities for a reliable water supply and improved security measures on campus. This call to action aims to enhance teaching, learning, and overall safety within the school environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, the appeal was made following weeks of inconsistent water supply and increasing security concerns. Mr. Francis Seshie, the Assistant Headmaster of Administration, expressed that these issues are negatively impacting academic activities and daily routines. "The current water situation is really affecting us," he stated, highlighting the reliance on irregular municipal water supplies that often lead to shortages during peak times.
Mr. Seshie emphasized the importance of water for sanitation, cooking, and general hygiene in the dormitories, indicating that the school cannot operate effectively without a proper water supply. He noted that when water supply is interrupted, lessons are disrupted, forcing students to spend time searching for water instead of attending classes. Students have shared frustrations over the difficulties in maintaining personal hygiene and dormitory cleanliness due to irregular water flow.
To cope with the water shortage, the school has been fetching water from nearby communities on weekends, which disrupts the institution's effective functioning. On top of this, Mr. Seshie raised concerns regarding insufficient security personnel, particularly in the dormitories, which has increased anxiety among students and staff. This concern has been amplified by a recent fire incident in the boys' dormitory.
Mr. Seshie appealed for authorities to prioritize student safety and provide necessary support, including assigning watchmen around the school compound, especially at night. Students have reported feeling unsafe when moving between dormitories and washrooms after dark, and have requested regular security patrols.
The school management has also appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Keta Municipal Assembly for intervention, noting that the growing student population of 800 strains existing facilities.
Local representatives, Mr. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey and Mr. Wisdom Seade, acknowledged the challenges and mentioned ongoing discussions with the Ghana Water Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana to address water supply and power fluctuation issues.
Teachers and students remain hopeful that these concerns will be resolved soon, leading to a stable water supply and a secure environment that could significantly enhance academic performance and discipline at Anlo-Afiadenyigba SHS.
