The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asuogyaman Constituency of the Eastern Region has solemnly pledged his unwavering commitment to continue his vision to work assiduously to transform the educational sector and Asuogyaman into a model constituency.
He says he owes his transformation from a young and ambitious boy who schooled and spent his entire life in the Constituency to now a Member of Parliament. Thomas Ampem Nyako pledged when he cut sod for work to begin on a 3-unit classroom block at the Aboasa Presby Basic School.
The MP recalled how he spent his entire basic education in the Constituency until he left to pursue his higher education outside Asuogyaman. The facility comes with three classroom blocks, a staff common room, head teacher’s office, and three toilet facilities.
The need to build a JHS facility in the school has become necessary due to the absence of a JHS in the Aboasa community, forcing pupils who completed primary school to seek JHS education in nearby communities. The lawmaker has
similarly established junior high schools for communities such as Abomayaw and Adomi Maame Water.
Mr. Nyarko, who said the project should be completed within the next couple of months, hoped that the current class six pupils would be the first batch of students to pursue junior high school education in the school.
He assured the people of the early execution of the project to facilitate JHS education in the area. ‘I’m establishing the third JHS here at Aboasa and just as I did at Abomayaw and Adomi Maame Water, this year, by the grace of God, the children will access JHS education in this community,’ he said to rapturous applause from the gathering.
Aside from the JHS blocks, the MP has similarly built and refurbished other educational infrastructure in the Asuogyaman constituency, including the ongoing construction of a classroom block at Sogokope near Asikuma and the refurbishment of an existing classroom block at Labolabo, as well as a massive infrastructural boost at the Apegusu Senior High School. Mr.
Ampem Nyarko was hopeful that the investment in educational infrastructure would greatly improve the standards of education in the area.
The MP also promised to donate streetlights to the Aboasa community to illuminate the area during the evenings as well as fix speed ramps on the roads to avert pedestrian knockdowns.
Apegusu drainage system
The Member of Parliament, on the same day, also cut the sod for the construction of a community self-initiated drainage system at the Apegusu quarters. According to the legislator, erosion was a major factor that necessitated the construction of the drainage system to avert further damage.
‘The place is low-lying and erosion is causing a lot of havoc here, so the community organized a durbar sometime last year to raise funds for the construction of a drainage in the town,’ said the lawmaker.
He donated 50 bags of cement for the start of the project and promised to continue to offer his support for the construction of the drainage till its completion.
Assemblyman for
Apegusu Electoral Area, Victor Amekor said the need for a drainage system has become necessary owing to the incessant flooding in the locality after heavy downpours.
The situation, he said, compelled the community to approach the legislator for urgent steps to address the problem.
‘When it rains and after, the way the running water runs through the town, we’re even afraid that one day it will take a kid away so we put it before our MP that this is our problem and he said he would come and assist the community,’ said the assemblyman.
He said though it’s the responsibility of the Asuogyaman District Assembly to facilitate the project, its limited resources were a problem, compelling the residents to fall on the MP for assistance. He therefore appealed to all stakeholders to rally behind the community to successfully execute the project by contributing their widow’s mite.
