AMA to Enforce Sanitation Laws During National Sanitation Day

Accra: The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the April 2026 edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place on Saturday, April 18, with authorities warning of strict enforcement measures.

According to Ghana Web, the exercise will commence at 6:00 am and will continue "until work is done" in selected parts of the Accra metropolis. This initiative is part of efforts to improve sanitation in the area. The AMA emphasized that the exercise is a part of its ongoing efforts to enhance environmental sanitation, protect public health, and encourage collective responsibility in maintaining the city's cleanliness.

The AMA has identified key areas for the exercise, including Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Guggisberg Avenue, Tuesday Market, Chorkor, Kaneshie, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. These focal areas underscore the commitment to addressing sanitation challenges in critical parts of the metropolis.

The AMA also highlighted that enforcement will play a significant role in the exercise. Residents, traders, transport operators, and shop owners in the affected areas are urged to participate fully to avoid sanctions or prosecution for sanitation-related offences. The Assembly further called on the public to support the exercise in large numbers and to maintain proper waste disposal practices beyond the clean-up day. Sustained environmental cleanliness is crucial to preventing disease outbreaks, preserving public spaces, and enhancing the image of the national capital.
