Accra: The Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, is set to appear before Parliament's Privileges Committee. This development follows a request by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
According to Ghana Web, during a House sitting on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the minister requested that Afenyo-Markin be referred to the Privileges Committee to address allegations he made concerning recruitment in the security services reportedly involving a senior government official. The minister indicated that Afenyo-Markin had previously made these accusations and that efforts were made to dissuade him.
However, during President John Dramani Mahama's State of the Nation Address on Friday, February 27, 2026, Afenyo-Markin reiterated his claims, prompting Muntaka to formally request his referral to the Privileges Committee. Muntaka expressed his frustration, stating that Afenyo-Markin had used the platform of the State of the Nation Address to assert that the current internal security recruitment was scandalous and corrupt, with potential legal consequences for those involved.
Muntaka further argued that Afenyo-Markin's actions amounted to contempt of the house, necessitating an investigation. He accused the Minority Leader of frequently making baseless allegations and stated that the Majority Caucus would insist on him providing evidence for his claims. Muntaka suggested that the Privileges Committee would be the appropriate forum for Afenyo-Markin to substantiate his allegations.
