Tamale: The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has thrown its support behind the upcoming 'Democracy Under Attack' demonstration, urging Ghanaians to participate peacefully in defence of the country's democratic values, constitutional rights, and the independence of state institutions.
According to Ghana Web, AFAG stated in a communication dated August 5, 2026, that the planned demonstration transcends partisan politics and aims to safeguard Ghana's democracy, the rule of law, and the credibility of public institutions. The group emphasized that citizens possess a constitutional right to peacefully assemble, demand accountability, and raise legitimate concerns whenever democratic principles appear to be under threat.
AFAG further explained that its decision to join the demonstration stems from growing concerns over developments it believes have implications for democratic freedoms and the administration of justice. The pressure group highlighted issues related to the arrest and prosecution of citizens, including journalists, young people, and activists, as well as high-profile cases such as the Saglemi and Sedina Tamakloe cases, all of which it argues raise questions about judicial independence and the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom.
The statement from AFAG elaborated on concerns regarding restrictive bail conditions, the Tribunals Act, and the right to a fair trial. The group called on well-meaning Ghanaians to join the demonstration peacefully while respecting the law, emphasizing that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively defend their rights through lawful means. "The strength of our democracy depends on both our willingness to speak out and our commitment to peace," the statement noted.
