Accra: Accra Academy has commemorated its 95th anniversary with a walk from its current campus to James Town, the site where the school was originally founded in 1931. The pilgrimage, which takes place every five years, is part of the anniversary activities aimed at honoring the school's origins.
According to Ghana Web, Accra Academy was established on July 20, 1931, in a rented one-storey building known as Ellen House. Over 1,000 students, alumni, and staff participated in the 3-hour-30-minute walk on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The walk commenced at the school's South Gate and traversed key roads including Dr Busia Highway and Hansen Road, concluding at Ankrah Lane, where Ellen House is situated.
In preparation for the pilgrimage, Ellen House and Claremont House, the latter being Accra Academy's first boarding house, were repainted and renovated. This refurbishment was sponsored by the Bleoo Legacy Fund, led by Emmanuel Bruce-Attah, with support from patrons Dr Edward Nartey Botchway and Kojo Addae-Mensah, among others.
During the event at Ellen House, Alfred Mills, the organising secretary of the Accra Academy Old Boys Association, shared the school's history and its founding. Board Chairman Justice Dotse congratulated participants for completing the walk and paid homage to the school's founders. He encouraged students to emulate the founders' dedication and focus on their studies to become responsible citizens.
Headmaster Eric Ebo Sey challenged students to reflect on the legacy they would leave behind after their time at Accra Academy. He reminded them of the founders' youthful vision and urged them to uphold the school's reputation through positive contributions.
The ceremony included traditional and Christian prayers, with Captain (Rtd) Ebenezer William Nii Amaa Amarteifio, the oldest alumnus present, highlighting his connection to the school's history. The event concluded with the school's song and anthem, supported by the brass band and enthusiastic cheers.
The anniversary celebrations continued with a homecoming event at the Bubiashie campus. Rodger Allotey, Chairman of the anniversary planning committee, welcomed alumni and acknowledged the efforts of the planning committee and sponsors. Dr Ishmael Dodoo, Chairman of the Fundraising Sub-Committee, appealed for support towards the school's centenary project, which includes staff accommodation and the renovation of the K.G. Konuah Assembly Hall.
The homecoming featured a roll call of year groups, donations, and musical performances, with Clog TV livestreaming the event for alumni worldwide. The celebrations concluded with a fireworks display at the Bubiashie campus.
